Victoria City Council discussing medical cannabis this Thursday

Victoria, BC: City council will hear from the secretary of
the Chief of Police this Thursday morning about how the Vancouver
police force relates to the BC Compassion Society. A future meeting date
when Health Canada explains the current legal status of cannabis for
medical purposes should also be announced. These meeting are the result
of pressure being applied to the municipal government by members of
the Cannabis Buyers’ Clubs of Canada after several police raids this year.
While the distant federal government is obviously responsible for writing new
regulations and licensing procedures concerning this issue, city hall is a valid
place to voice issues for several reasons. The police department is paid by the
municipal government and the mayor is the chair of the police board. Secondly, the
city council is responsible for licensing businesses, and we have certain issues
around the current legal status of the CBCoC’s headquarters which need to be
resolved. Thirdly, all elected officials have a responsibility to listen to the
concerns of the citizens they represent and to petition other levels of government
when appropriate.
Thursday evening supporters of the CBCoC will again address council regarding the
current circumstances of the club, given an update about other relevant court
decisions and ask council to resolve the business license questions as soon as
possible.
