Victoria, B.C.: As a result of the last police raid on the headquarters of the Cannabis
Buyers’ Clubs of Canada in Victoria, Colby Budda will be in Victoria Courthouse room #101 on
Thursday August 8th at 1:30pm to enter a not guilty plea to charges of possession for the purpose
of trafficking. The trial is expected this fall.
The oldest public medical distributor in the country, with over 1,000 members the CBCoC has survived
4 police searches this year. In the most recent raid of June 21, Victoria Police Strikeforce obtained
a warrant and arrested Colby on very questionable grounds the day after a problem with an ex-member brought
police to the store. The club’s founder, Leon “Ted” Smith, is free because the courts clearly recognize
that the cannabis laws infringe upon the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. However, Victoria police continue
to take every possible opportunity to raid and harass the club, knowing Health Canada has only given a few
permits to possess cannabis and there is no legal source for them.
In reaction to the continual raids, Ted has decided to directly influence the local police board by
becoming the Mayor of Victoria in the fall elections. Ted announced his platform of “Thoughtful Economic
Development” one day before Alan Lowe stated his intentions of running for re-election. As well as
becoming chair of the police board, Ted will help build a multi-purpose youth facility.
