Victoria, B.C. – A trial date has been set regarding the arrest of Colby Budda during the
June 21 raid of the Cannabis Buyers’ Clubs of Canada (CBCoC), the oldest public medical
cannabis distributor in the country.

While the trial will not occur until February 17, 2003, the club’s founder, Leon “Ted” Smith,
is running for Mayor of Victoria this fall to test the court of public opinion. We are
confident that the result of the trial will be that the charges are thrown out because the
reasons for the warrant were questionable and Colby did nothing more than ask the police to
leave the club. This was the 4th raid by police since January, every search occuring after
a member or ex-member caused the club a problem. Since the beginning, the CBCoC has openly
accepted everyone with a permanent, physical medical problem. This policy opens the door to
some individuals with severe judgement and ethical problems, and until we catch them engaged
in inappropriate or questionable behaviour, we assist every qualified member as equally as
possible. We are confident that the courts will continue to see our activities as a benefit
to the community and police action against us as unnecessary and harmful to society. Even if
Ted is not elected mayor of Victoria by February 17, 2003, many other court decisions, government studies
and the lack of accountable and functional medical cannabis programs by Health Canada will
continue to justify the existence of groups like the CBCoC.
