Celebrating 7 Years of Hempology 101 in Victoria!

Victoria, B.C.: Seven years ago a spark called Hempology 101 flew into Victoria
on the shoulders of Leon “Ted” Smith.
Coming form Vancouver, where Hempology 101 started, a large force has gethered behind a
movement which began with simple weekly, public meetings. The history of Hempology 101
has yet to be written, and its work is far from complete. After 7 years of work on Vancouver
Island, an impressive number of gatherings, newspaper articles, photocopy handouts,
conferences and public demonstrations has established Hempology 101 as an institution
in Victoria and the global international cannabis culture.
While experiencing many growing seasons, creating a non-profit society, two post-secondary
student clubs, and a web-page which sees about 4,000 hits per day, Hempology 101 has also
witnessed many changes in Canada. Soon after moving to Victoria, Ted founded the first public
cannabis club for people with incurable medical problems in the country. Now called the
Cannabis Buyers’ Clubs of Canada, with networks in Victoria and Coombs-Parksville in B.C.
and one in Halifax, Nova Scotia, supplying over 1,000 people, this group has thrived despite
police raids, intense scrutiny and a lack of assistance from Health Canada. In the meantime,
courts across the country have stood in defense of victims of the drug war, granting
absolute discharges and freedom to some advocates.
Today, the Senate Committee on Illegal Drugs has released it’s final report on
cannabis, which reccommends that cannabis be legalized. Locally, Ted is preparing for an
election campaign this fall which could see him as mayor of Victoria on November 16th.

The potential for Hempology 101 in the future would fill a book. Thanks to everyone who
has helped us grow to this point! Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em!
