Victoria, B.C.: This Saturday, friends and members of the Cannabis Buyers Club of Canada will be celebrating 7 years of work in Victoria. The oldest, public, medical cannabis in the country, the CBC of C, now has 1,200 members with small branches in Parksville, B.C. and Halifax, N.S. The CBC of C is requesting a special permit to legally distribute cannabis to it’s members. Health Canada was ordered by Ontario Superior Court Justice Sidney Lederman on Jan 9 to provide a legitimate source of cannabis within six months.
The past seven years of work have not been without struggle. Last year, four police raids in six months left the club over $25,000 in debt with several charges being laid against club founder, Leon ‘Ted’ Smith and Colby Budda. On February 17th the trial resulting from the June 21st raid will go to court. Defense is arguing that the search warrant was obtained illegally. If the warrant is not thrown out by the judge, we will argue during sentencing that Colby should be rewarded for his work, not punished. We are preparing video testimony from club members to present to the court in defense of Colby. Any interested members should contact the club to arrange for an interview before February 10th.
The constitutional trials of Ted Smith have been put back to February 24th. The Crown prosecutors are expected to further delay pending a decision by the Supreme Court of Canada.
