How Can Cannabis Heal?
Cannabis can help people suffering from many incurable physical disabilities and diseases.
This list includes AIDS, Hepatitis C, cancer, arthritis, epilepsy, glaucoma, MS, Crohn’s disease, migraines and spinal cord injuries, just to name a few.
There are three basic methods of consumption smoking, eating or applying topically as a salve. While smoking marijuana seems to be the most common method of ingestion, one should bear in mind that our lungs are not designed for the intake of hot gasses. Eating cannabis is often better for managing extreme pain and muscle spasms.
The resins within cannabis contain at least sixty compounds that have potential therapeutic values. Each plant has a different combination of about 6 to 12 of these molecules. Here is a short list of some cannabinoids:
THC: has euphoric, stimulant, muscle-relaxing, anti-epileptic, anti-emetic, anti-inflammatory, appetite stimulating, bronchiodilating, anti-depressant, hypotensive and analgesic effects.
Cannabidiol (CBD): sedative, muscle-relaxing and analgesic effects.
Cannabichromene (CBC): promotes analgesic effects of THC and is sedative.
Cannabigerol (CBG): sedative and anti-microbial properties, as well as lowering intra-ocular pressure.
Cannabinol (CBN): mildly psychoactive, its primary effects are to lower intra-ocular pressure and anti-epileptic.
What Does the CBCoC Do?
Aside from providing a variety of strains of cannabis at a range of prices, the club sells cookies, protein balls, lozenges, edible THC capsules called Ryanol, massage oil and salve. See our product guide for more information. There are also pipes, toke-stones, hemp rolling papers and other hemp-based health products available.
Eating cannabis is a health way to control pain and induce sleep. The process involved in making cookies enhances certain properties of cannabis. The combination of eating and smoking cannabis can be used effectively to manage pain and stimulate appetite.
Cannabis has been used as a healing oil since ancient times. When applied to the skin, cannabis is still an anti-biotic, anti-fungal, muscle relaxant, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-toxicant. From bug bites to herpes, cancer to sever burns, cannabis applied to the skin has a wide variety of benefits.
The Club provides information about Health Canada’s license programs.
Whenever possible, we offer assistance to our members who wish to grow medical marijuana for themselves.
The club is currently conducting a research project comparing the use of cannabis to prescription drugs. This cost/benefit analysis is an important step in the process of documenting the improvements that occur in people’s health after they start using cannabis as medicine.
Who and Where Are We?
The Cannabis Buyers’ Clubs of Canada started helping people with incurable physical medical conditions by providing them with medical marijuana and products made from cannabis in January 1996. The CBC of C is the oldest ‘compassion’ club in Canada with about 1,900 current members.
On April 1st, 2001 the Cannabis Buyers’ Clubs of Canada opened its first official storefront location in downtown Victoria on Johnson St.
Our second network opened in late July 2002, in Halifax, N.S.
In Jan. 2002, we suffered a raid by police which was followed by raids in March and June and finally in Feb 2003. All of these raids have gone to trial and all 11 trafficking charges laid were dropped, acquitted or turned over in the Court of Appeal.
“It is unsettling to contemplate persons with AIDS or who are undergoing cancer treatment being forced to go down to the drug emporium which operates in the downtown core of Victoria to acquire their marijuana from persons who are interested only in selling them drugs of unknown quality for a profit. But on January 3, 2002, but for compassion clubs such as Mr. Smith’s, that was their only alternative?

On July 31, 2000 the Ontario Supreme Court of Appeals gave the federal government 12 months to introduce new laws protecting citizens who use cannabis as medicine. Since July 31, 2001, Health Canada has issued licences to possess and grow cannabis to people who have a doctor willing to fill out the forms. Most doctors fear the College of Physicians and Surgeons and refuse to sign forms that may cause problems with their license to practice. Other doctors feel do not have enough scientific information to make an educated decision.
The $5.7 million contract signed by Prairie Plant Systems to grow medical cannabis for HEALTH CANADA is only intended for strictly controlled studies. The quality of the research cannabis is questionable and is grown in a mineshaft, not a natural environment. Those qualified to enter studies will be told to smoke no other cannabis and will be given limited amounts of low-grade product and placebos.
HEALTH CANADA does not assist individuals who have received legal licenses to possess and grow cannabis with any problems regarding the use and production of this plant in their homes.

To become a member of the CBC of C
We require proof from a physician of a permanent, physical disability or disease, as well as photo ID. There are no membership fees. This definition includes many people with obscure medical problems, the symptoms of which can often be alleviated through the use of cannabis. For people suffering from life-long pain or disease, the ability of cannabis to induce relaxation, stimulate appetite and assist sleeping is fundamental to maintaining a more enjoyable life. For mental-health illnesses such as depression, a doctor’s recommendation is required.
We also work with our sister organization, the International Hempology 101 Society, to educate the public about the beneficial use of cannabis as a medicine, as well as hemp products such as clothes, rope, paper, industrial oils, fuel, and food just to mention a few. We have a student club at the University of Victoria where we teach a free lecture series during the school year and host an annual convention. The International Hempology 101 Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, Cannabis Digest. We also have a meeting every Weds at 7pm somewhere in downtown Victoria.
