INTERVIEW BY MATT MERNAGH WITH POT SEED BREEDER DAN KONSTANTIN
My original quest to speak with Konstantin amongst cannabis community contacts turned up all the wrong leads. His lawyer hooked me up.
Yet cannabis aficionados drool over his creation of a plant he called God Bud-a High Times Cannabis Cup winner, featured in Time Magazine that packs a couch lock punch that med users love.
In a legal world Konstantin would be credited like musicians, with with a five N album.
Until his case cleared the courts, he couldn”t say, “”I created God Bud.”‘
M: How many seeds does a plant produce?
D: A great big one will yield a couple thousand.
M: How did you make seeds?
D: You take a male God Bud plant and you cut the branches. You whack the branches inside the bucket to bust up the pollen. People will apply the pollen with Q-Tips. I just shake the bucket over the female God Bud plant.

M: What’s God Bud lineage?
D: It’s a Hawaiin Kush strain. I just chased the strain. I’ve been growing since I”m sixteen. I’m really good. I like a good skunky flavor. When I hurt, God Bud is the shit. When I first got it right, she took five months to fucking grow. It was really slow. You can”t wait five fucking months for a plant to bud. So I kept finding something [another strain] to speed it up. Making it faster, faster, and even faster. They come up early and mature faster than average. When I got popped I was down to a God Bud strain that finished in twenty eight days.
M: Twenty eight days for budding?
D: Four fucking weeks there’s bud. Three weeks for veg. God Bud males are hard to find. They just don”t grow male. And if they do they”re still really really slow. I don”t even think BC Bud Depot has the original. I was working on the fastest growing plants. Two feet in veg, by the time the plant finished the buds were touching the ceiling. It grew another two thirds. The police got that shit.
M: Were you just born to grow?
D: Breeding experiments are fun. I like playing with everything, like Barney Farm’s Sweet Tooth with Timewarp. That’s really fucking fast plant. Grapefruit is great male to work with. When you cross a sativa with an indica it could be anything. You’ll get some that are all of the father, some all of the mother and then maybe something new. You want stable seeds that will smoke and smell the same.
