International Medical Marijuana Week
By admin | February 16, 2011
With a different event planned for 8 days in a row between February 13 and 20th, International Medical Marijuana Week is going to light up Victoria. After celebrating International Medical Marijuana Day on Nov 15th for 16 years here, this is the first time a full week of cannabis activities have been organized following the lead of Americans For Safe Access and Alabamans For Compassionate Use. A joint effort of the International Hempology 101 Society and the Cannabis Buyers Clubs of Canada, this week will give members of the public opportunities to learn more about the medical uses of cannabis from patients and the challenges faced by the caregivers.
Kicking off the week will be the traditional rally at the Ministry of Health, starting at noon Sun Feb 13. Since 1995, Hempology 101 has held a protest to bring attention to the plight of medical cannabis users, legal developments and Health Canada smokescreens. This year’s focus will be the raid on the Dec 2009 bakery of the CBC of C that left Owen Smith facing charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cannabis and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the most active chemical in the plant. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 19 and 20. The club has hired top legal guns, John Conroy and Kirk Tousaw, and is trying to raise about $100,000 to pay for what is expected to be a 20 day trial later this year.
An award winning film, WAITING TO INHALE, will be played Mon night at 8pm at the University of Victoria. It is in the Human Social Development Building Room #240, with suggested donations of $2. The following night will be very entertaining, with the new act, The Hicks, playing at Paparazzi’s from 9 pm to 1 am, with Ian Robertson filling in on the stage so they can go for toke breaks. Cover charge is $5.
On Weds Feb 16, the weekly meeting of the UVSS Hempology 101 club will be the focus of the day. Gathering at 420 every Weds after the free, non-credit lecture series, the UVSS Hempology 101 Club is the largest student club at the University of Victoria. Starting at 7:30 pm the next night, TEAM 420 will be playing its monthly game of Frisbee golf at City Hall. In a typical stoner move, we originally thought there was a city council meeting that evening and planned upon receiving the official declaration from the City of Victoria that evening and make a request for assistance in the upcoming trial. Therefore, the following Thurs, Feb 24, the council will be asked to make the declaration retroactively, and, more importantly, for their assistance in obtaining an Exemption #56 from the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act, the same legal mechanism used by InSite.
Since 2003 a silent art auction has been the main means of raising funds for the club’s legal fees and has been part of IMMD. This year the Rising Star Bakery on Broad Street is pleased to support us by co-hosting the silent art auction, with 7 fantastic pieces there and over 20 more at the headquarters of the CBC of C, 826 Johnson St. Bidding ends at 420 sharp at both locations on Fri Feb 18.
Cannabis workshops are going to be held at the University of Victoria for the first time Sat Feb 19, as a precursor to the 12th Annual Cannabis Convention which will be held there the following day. The workshops will give participants a chance to discuss politics, growing, internet activism and the Marijuana Medical Access Regulations with activists, patients and students, complimenting the keynote speakers that will appear at the convention. The workshops are from 2 to 4 pm Sat Feb 19 in the David Strong Building Rooms C103 and C116 and the 12th Annual Cannabis Convention will be from 1 to 4pm in the Mathews and McQueen Auditorium in the David Strong Building the next day, Sun Feb 20. The week will end with a party at the Sunset Room that evening from 9 pm to 2 am, $10 cover.
