Hemp society seeks research chief

International research director, conference organizer and scientific journal editor wanted, competitive wage set at $12 an hour.
Victoria’s International Hempology 101 Society, the medical marijuana advocacy group best known for its regular Wednesday evening protests in front the Ministry of Health building on Blanshard Street, is looking to raise the level of scientific discourse.
“I guess it’s kind of a strategic attempt to help change the laws through science,” said society president Leon ‘Ted’ Smith.
Smith hopes the journal and conferences will lead to better science on “whole-plant” marijuana medications. Most research being published currently tends to focus on synthetic cannabis derivatives, he said.
The research would lead, in turn, to legal support for medical use of natural marijuana, Smith added.
“For the courts to have reliable evidence to back up an argument, they need to have expert witnesses providing peer-reviewed scientific evidence.
Right now the only peer-reviewed journals essentially are owned by pharmaceutical companies.”
Smith admitted the pay for the position is “not executive director wages,” but he doesn’t think the wage, which would come out to $25,000 a year, will deter qualified candidates.
“To tell you the truth, I’ve had some very interesting resumes come in already,” he said.
“I’ve had one person with a paralegal degree, another person has worked in sales and marketing and promotions for 35 years … and then another really interesting student who’s graduating from the university.”
