Pot day on hold
By Hempology | October 31, 2002
From the Victoria News, October 30th, 2002
In all but the most unusual cases, the matter of the City of Victoria proclaiming official days, weeks or months in the name of special interest groups prompts very little discussion.
But a request by the International Hempology 101 Society – through its representatives Ted Smith and Tyler MacDonald – for Nov. 15 to be proclaimed international medical marijuana day in Victoria was tabled, pending review of its wording.
“It reflectes a lack of knowledge and a lack of concern on the part of council,” said Smith, who simply shook his head in disbelief as he watched city council agree to table the proclamation.
Plans for the special day, which aims to “encourage tolerance, compassion and understanding toward individuals who need cannabis to relieve their pain the symptoms from permanent medical problems”, was halted in its tracks when Mayor Alan Lowe and Coun. Helen Hughes questioned a line stating that Health Canada was “forced by the courts to start a legal process for the distruction and use of cannabis as medicine”.
Smith, who just happens to be running for mayor against Lowe, claims that council is simply stonewalling.
“People on this council are invested in maintaining the status quo,” said the candidate for mayor. “They’d rather put resources into policing.”
No date for council revisiting the proclamation was established by the Victoria News deadline.
