Four men accused of growing and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis have appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court.

Mirza Pasic, 29, of Kealba, Ante Sindik, 60, of Heidelberg West, Muhumed Taric, 28, of Balaclava and Vahdet Ekinovic, 49, of Coburg, each face 10 charges of cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis, trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis,

cultivating cannabis and obtaining financial advantage by deception.

Mr Sindik also faces two charges of failing to store a firearm correctly.

Police allege the men grew hundreds of marijuana plants at four separate properties at Haddon and Smythes Creek between April and September, 2003.

It is alleged the men established sophisticated hydroponic systems at each of the properties, located in Sago Hill Rd, Ross Creek-Haddon Rd, Wallaby Creek Rd and Bells Rd.

The court heard illegal electricity connections were located at all four properties and programmable logic controllers – special-purpose computers used to perform low level controlling and monitoring of hardware such as power supply – were installed

at two of the sites.

Electrical inspector Glen Donald yesterday said all of the illegal connections ran from the houses to sheds, with the longest connection stretching about 20m.

Powercor revenue protection investigator Geoffrey Barringer said tens of thousands of kilowatts of electricity had been bypassed from the properties’ meter boxes during the operation.

But during cross-examination, Mr Barringer conceded there could have been no electricity stolen from the Wallaby Creek Rd property.

The committal hearing, before Magistrate William O’Day continues.
