Alberta farmers cashing in on hemp farms

Many Alberta farmers have taken to hemp to round out their crops and some say they’re making a tidy profit.

According to a recent study done by Alberta Agriculture, farmers in the province seeded the most hemp in all of Canada at 6,434 hectares last year.

The preliminary estimate for this year is 8,000 hectares.

“As long as we keep making money we’ll keep growing it,” says Will Van Roessel.

The Bow Island-area farmer is about to harvest hemp for the third straight year.

He’s been contracted to grow the hemp for its seeds, which could be processed into a wide range of products including oil, flour, shampoo and wood sealant. Van Roessel says he’s expecting to make three times the amount he would get for wheat.

Despite historic ruling, marijuana growers now face new hurdle

A historic court decision has dropped all drug charges against the former baker of the Cannabis Buyer’s Club — a win that is likely to have ramifications across the country, according to the club’s lawyer. But despite the good news for marijuana advocates, a new battle has now crested the horizon.

Club baker Owen Smith was officially acquitted in the B.C. Supreme Court in Nanaimo on Thurs., Jan. 10. While the case is expected to head to the B.C. Court of Appeal, Smith’s lawyer Kirk Tousaw is pleased with the prospect, stating that a Court of Appeal ruling affirming Thursday’s decision could have a far-reaching impact. Nation-wide Protests to Respond to Health Canada’s Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations

By admin | January 16, 2013

Victoria, BC.- The International Hempology 101 Society is spearheading a nationwide protest of Health Canada’s proposed Marihuana for Medical Proposes Regulations (MMPR), which are a response to the many court cases that have found the current scheme, the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations, to be in clear violation of section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (CCRF). The proposed changes remove patients’ right to grow their own medicine, while continuing to prohibit them from processing their medicine into healthier alternatives than the dried plant matter prescribed by Health Canada.

Voices from all across Canada will gather to protest the MMPR on February 21st outside of their MP’s offices, with 42 ridings confirmed to date. We are also encouraging anyone who can’t make it out to participate in a ‘phone jam’ aimed at the office of our Minister of Health, Leona Aglukkaq, as well as a letter writing campaign. This gives us one week to apply pressure before the deadline for public consultation on the matter passes on February 28th. Read the rest of this entry »

Victoria cannabis baker acquitted in case that challenged medical marijuana laws

NANAIMO — In a case that may have national ramifications, the head baker of the Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Canada has been acquitted of outstanding drug offences.

The charges against Owen Smith — possession for the purpose of trafficking and unlawful possession of marijuana — have been at the centre of a successful constitutional challenge against Health Canada’s medical marijuana laws. April’s landmark ruling allowed people who are authorized to use medical marijuana to drink it in tea or bake it in brownies and cookies. Read the rest of this entry »

Head baker at B.C. pot dispensary not guilty of trafficking

Head baker at B.C. pot dispensary not guilty of trafficking

The head baker for a medical marijuana dispensary in Victoria, B.C., has been found not guilty of possession and trafficking.

Owen Smith was charged in 2009 and admitted to making marijuana cookies and pot-based creams for medical marijuana users.

However, an earlier court ruling found the law governing baked marijuana, which limited medical marijuana users to smoking pot only, is unconstitutional.

At a hearing on Thursday, the Crown decided against presenting any evidence against Smith, so the B.C. Supreme Court judge declared him not guilty.

Ted Smith, the former head of the Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Canada, says the Crown can’t retry Owen Smith.

But he does expect the Crown to appeal the constitutional ruling.

“Owen is free and clear of all criminal charges,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »
