Hempology 101 Textbook!

By admin | July 12, 2012

Victoria, BC: Local activist, newspaper publisher, and celebrated anti-prohibitionist Ted Smith is ready to release the long-awaited Hempology 101: The History and Uses of Cannabis Sativa. A book launch will be held at the Sacred Herb on Tues July 17 from noon to 2 pm, with a reading at high noon. It will be available in stores and on-line that day.

Ted has written the book to accompany his weekly lecture series at the University of Victoria. It offers a comprehensive and holistic view of humanity’s relationship with cannabis through history into the present day. It will also be of interest to anyone who would like to know more about the solutions that this plant offers to many of the environmental and economic problems faced by the world today, from supplying renewable food, fuel, textiles, and building materials, to providing inexpensive and easily accessible medicine.

Ted has been making the news regularly since he began his career of activism when he moved to Victoria to start Hempology 101 in 1995. In 1996 he founded the Cannabis Buyer’s Club of Canada and has provided cannabis products to people with permanent, physical disabilities since. As president of the International Hempology 101 Society, Ted is also the publisher of the Cannabis Digest newspaper. Hempology 101 represents the culmination of this work to date, explaining in great detail the many reasons he feels so passionately that this plant deserves to be embraced by modern society.

The book will be available to purchase from www.hempology101store.ca, or likewise straight off the shelf at Sacred Herb and other stores in Canada for $24.95. Ted will also be touring Canada this year, with book signings scheduled in Ontario from July 21 to 29 and Alberta from Aug 17-26.

For more information call 250-381-4220 or see Hempology.ca. The cover can be seen at https://www.facebook.com/ted.smith.984?ref=tn_tnmn

Uruguay Marijuana Legalization

Government Proposes Selling Weed Law To Fight Crime

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — Uruguay’s national government said Wednesday it hopes to fight a growing crime problem by selling marijuana to citizens registered to buy it, and will send a bill to Congress that would make it the first country in the world to do so.

Under the plan, only the government would be allowed to sell marijuana and only to adults who register on a government database, letting officials keep track of their purchases over time.

Minister of Defense Eleuterio Fernandez Huidobro told reporters in Montevideo that the measure aims to weaken crime in the country by removing profits from drug dealers and diverting users from harder drugs.

He said the bill would be sent to Congress soon, but an exact date had not been set.

“We’re shifting toward a stricter state control of the distribution and production of this drug,” Fernandez said. “It’s a fight on both fronts: against consumption and drug trafficking. We think the prohibition of some drugs is creating more problems to society than the drug itself.”

Uruguayan newspapers have reported that money from taxes on marijuana sold by the government would go toward rehabilitating drug addicts. The government did not provide details.

There are no laws against marijuana use in Uruguay. Possession of the drug for personal use has never been criminalized. Read the rest of this entry »

Mulgrew: Ottawa drags out medical pot reform

Mulgrew: Ottawa drags out medical pot reform

The federal government’s plan to revamp Canada’s medical marijuana program and address court-raised constitutional concerns seems half-baked.

The proposed changes ignore a recent B.C. Supreme Court ruling and do little to properly address some of the most contentious issues.

In particular, Ottawa intends to continue to permit only dried marijuana to be produced, sold and distributed to medical patients who will use a new document issued by doctors to buy pot from commercial producers.

That decision flies in the face of Justice Robert Johnson’s ruling in April that patients could make cannabis-infused oils, drink it in their tea or bake it into brownies and cookies, not just smoke it.

He said the present restriction was unconstitutional and gave Health Canada a year to fix that aspect of the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations, as they are legally known.

Kirk Tousaw, the lawyer in the case, said he was surprised Ottawa appears to be ignoring the judge’s opinion.

“The charter says one thing, the judge cites the charter and the government is saying it doesn’t care?” he asked.

“I’m thinking of going back in front of the judge and saying, ‘Look, they have no intention of adhering to your ruling.’ It is disturbing, to say the least, that Health Canada appears to have given the decision … no regard whatsoever. When will the government of Canada begin to respect the charter, the rights of patients and the decisions of the B.C. Supreme Court?”   Read the rest of this entry »

Hemp different from smokeable cannabis, both tangled in government regulation difficult for farmers

By Sarah Simpson, Citizen June 1, 2012

Ted Smith has long argued that marijuana production should be a legal industry, with cultivation regulated, instead of hindered, by the government.

The Victoria-based president of the International Hempology 101 Society and publisher of Cannabis Digest is one of many, from government officials to noted academics, who believe the time has come for a change in the way society views the plant.

In 2008, B.C. Business magazine placed the province’s marijuana industry in second place for its contribution to the B.C. gross domestic product.

Smith says it’s time to reformat how cannabis is thought about, believing it could do wonders for the province’s economic outlook.

“In this time of fiscal restraint we can no longer afford to waste money on a lost war and a lost battle,” Smith said.

And there’s no better place to begin the shift than on Vancouver Island, where he thinks the crop would flourish. Read the rest of this entry »

B.C. judge strikes down portions of medical marijuana law

By admin | April 17, 2012

VICTORIA — People authorized to use medical marijuana can now bake it in brownies and spread it on toast, the B.C. Supreme Court ruled Friday.

Justice Robert Johnston concluded that the section in Health Canada’s Marijuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) restricting recipients to using only the dried form of the drug is unconstitutional as it breaches the Charter of Rights section guaranteeing ‘life, liberty, and security of the person.’

“The remedy for this breach is to remove the word ‘dried’ where it appears in the Marijuana Medical Access Regulations and I so order,” said Johnston.

The decision comes out of a constitutional challenge by Owen Smith, the head baker for the Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Canada.
